The Igreja Paroquial de Leça da Palmeira’s origins are shrouded in mystery. It’s believed that a smaller Romanesque church stood here long ago. This original structure the Igreja de S Miguel de Moroça was likely demolished. A new church was built in its place between 1568 and 1578. King Sebastian ordered its construction. Imagine the bustling activity. The sounds of hammers and chisels ringing out.
Now gaze at the magnificent altarpiece in the chancel. It’s an explosion of golden carvings. Intricate details of vines grapes doves acanthus leaves and winged heads adorn it. This exuberant piece is a testament to the skill of the artisans. The altarpiece was completed in 1714. Portuense painter Manuel Ribeiro gilded it. The rocaille-style top was added later between 1762 and 1778. Note the graceful Solomonic columns. They twist and turn supporting the intricate design.
More than just a pretty picture this church is a living testament to faith. It holds stories of generations of Leça da Palmeira residents. Their lives their joys their sorrows are woven into the very fabric of its walls. Notice the granite floor. Many ancestors rest beneath. The wooden altars and ceilings are beautifully crafted. The original church was a small low building. It was made of rough-hewn stone. Thick walls and buttresses gave it strength. Its design may have been similar to the old Igreja de Cedofeita in Porto.
The Igreja Paroquial de Leça da Palmeira has three naves. Each has five arches. Four columns made of ashlar stand on each side. The church’s interior has changed over time. Thick iron grilles were once on the windows. They have been removed. Now beautiful artistic stained glass lets light flood in. These were added by D Adelina Leite Nogueira Pinto Domingos de Oliveira.
