“Well, this was a place for a grand occasion”, remarked our tour guide, pointing to the Igreja Paroquial de Ariz. We stood before the grand facade of this historic church, nestled in the heart of the town. The Igreja Paroquial de Ariz tells a story of a bygone era, a time when a small village was once the epicenter of a flourishing county. Before the reforms of the 19th century, the town of Ariz was part of the county of Bem Viver. Records show that the county itself was the result of lands awarded to Muninho Viegas, a hero of the Portuguese Reconquista, for his bravery against the Moors. It was in this very spot that the historical legacy of the powerful “Conde de Ariz” was nurtured. Now, though, we do not see the remnants of his grandeur but a testament to something different: the resilience of faith. The church is a testament to the enduring power of faith, even in times of great change. It has been a beacon of hope for the people of Ariz, providing both spiritual and emotional support for centuries. While the original structure has been revamped over time to incorporate modern facilities, the church remains the heart of the community, a place of worship and social gathering. It continues to offer a sense of belonging and community for the people of Ariz, who appreciate its unique history and the role it plays in their lives.
