The stories whispered through the centuries. This charming, stone-built church, Igreja Nova de Vilarinho, looks serene and peaceful. It is known to the locals as the Igreja Paroquial de Vilarinho, a Romanesque jewel dating back to the 12th century. Once part of a thriving monastery, dedicated to Saint Michael, it was a focal point of life in Vilarinho.
But beneath its placid exterior, the church holds stories of faith, power and change. Built in 1070, it served not only as a place of worship but also as a final resting place for prominent families, the Fafes, who had endowed the monastery.
This was a time when powerful monasteries wielded significant influence, and Vilarinho was no exception. The church was enriched by the gifts of these families and flourished for several centuries. However, the church and its monastery fell on hard times. The lands and riches were mismanaged by the Church authorities, and the power of the monastery dwindled.
With the suppression of religious orders in 1834, the church was sold and its fate seemed uncertain. Yet, in 1953, it found new life when it was declared an Imóvel de Interesse Público, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.
Today, Igreja Nova de Vilarinho stands as a reminder of the past.
