Igreja Nova Apostólica

Across the street stands Igreja Nova Apostólica a testament to faith and history. Its story begins not in Porto but across the Atlantic. In the 1800s theological discussions sparked a movement. Believers felt traditional churches lacked the Holy Spirit’s vibrancy. Revivalist movements emerged in England and Scotland. These groups prayed for renewed spiritual gifts. This led to the formation of the Catholic Apostolic Church. This church was led by apostles chosen by prophets. It emphasized the Holy Spirit’s activity. The Catholic Apostolic Church tried to unite all of Christianity under these newly appointed apostles. They shared their beliefs with spiritual and secular leaders. Sadly this effort met with limited success. The Catholic Apostolic Church had to build its own structure. It developed its ministry and liturgy. This was done alongside its ecumenical efforts. A schism in Hamburg in 1863 caused divisions. Differences arose over scriptural interpretations and the appointment of new apostles. This marked the birth of the New Apostolic Church. In 1897 a chief apostle ministry was established. This was a single leader overseeing all congregations. Many people led this ministry over the years including Friedrich Krebs Hermann Niehaus Johann Gottfried Bischoff Walter Schmidt Ernst Streckeisen Hans Urwyler Richard Fehr and Wilhelm Leber. A significant event occurred on Christmas Day 1951. Chief Apostle Johann Gottfried Bischoff declared Jesus Christ’s imminent return. This became known within the church as “the message”. He based it on a personal revelation. This added special authority to the message. Under Chief Apostle Walter Schmidt’s leadership the church grew globally. It transitioned from a quiet niche existence to becoming more active in public life. The New Apostolic Church embraced different cultures and traditions. This presented significant challenges in the 21st century. The core belief remains the expectation of Jesus Christ’s return.
