The Igreja Matriz de Seroa wasn’t always here. Its story begins long ago. It was known by other names Seroja Asseroya and Seroia. The name Seroa itself evokes a sense of rest after labor. A fitting name for a place of quiet reflection. The original church was smaller and built in 1701. Master stonemason Damião da Rocha from Santiago de Fonte Arcada provided the stone. It was considered too small for the growing community.
But this original church holds treasures. Its beautiful Baroque facade and side altars showcase the national style. The pulpit is a stunning work of art. In the old sacristy are two wooden panels from a now-lost altarpiece. Though fading the paintings hint at a Madonna and Child. The sculpture of Our Lady of Nativity is equally worthy of admiration. Near the old church lies a vestige of a former oratory dedicated to Saint Anne. Traces of this oratory were found around 1938. A spring called Saint Anne’s spring once marked this spot. Recently a precious fresco depicting Saint Anne was discovered. It is nestled in a niche next to the main altar.
The original Igreja Matriz de Seroa is no longer the main place of worship. A modern church now serves the needs of the expanding parish. The older church however remains.
