Picture a grand Gothic structure. This is the Igreja Matriz de Guimarei. It stands proudly in Guimarães. This church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to history. Its foundations go back to a pre-Romanesque monastery. Countess Mumadona Dias founded it in 949. A fortification protected this monastery. This fortification predates Guimarães Castle.

The original Romanesque church remains mostly lost to time. A few pieces survive. One remarkable piece is a Romanesque capital. It’s now in the Alberto Sampaio Museum. This capital depicts the battle between good and evil. It’s a typically Benedictine iconography.

In the 14th century the church became a pilgrimage site. People venerated an image of Santa Maria. King John I of Portugal worshipped this very image. He did so on the eve of the Battle of Aljubarrota. After his victory he fulfilled a vow. He financed a major remodelling of the building. Work largely finished by 1401. It continued until 1413.

The Igreja Matriz de Guimarei’s architecture is stunning. It has a simple three-nave plan with a prominent transept. This is typical of mendicant Gothic. But other elements set it apart. The large window on the facade is exceptional. It’s arranged like an altarpiece. It showcases one of the best Gothic iconographic programs in Portugal. It’s dedicated to the Virgin Mary’s genealogy. It features the Tree of Jesse and the Annunciation.

Gothic features remain. Parts of the nave’s roof trusses are still visible. These are decorated with heraldic and bestiary iconography. The church underwent later alterations. The new chancel dates to the reign of King Peter II. It’s far deeper than the original. The interior boasts gilded woodwork. It’s attributed to Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho.

The Igreja Matriz de Guimarei marks the end of a phase of national Gothic. The following decades saw a strong English influence. The Monastery of Batalha exerted this influence throughout the country. The church’s story is woven into Guimarães’ history. A visit is a journey through time. It reveals the faith and artistic skill of centuries past.
