Have you ever wondered why the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos stands as a beacon of hope? The Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos is more than just a church. It is a sanctuary. It is a place of pilgrimage deeply rooted in faith. Its story dates back to the 18th century.

Back then, the area of Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos was the main center of devotion. Pilgrims came from far and wide. They sought solace and divine intervention. According to local lore, a man was murdered here long ago. A simple cross marked the spot. It was later stolen. Mariana de Valadares replaced it with another. This cross bore an image of the crucified Christ. Miracles then started happening. Devotees were healed and protected. Word spread like wildfire throughout the region.

Before 1720, a small chapel existed here. It underwent restoration in 1870. Interestingly, it housed 52 ex-votos. These offerings symbolized answered prayers and gratitude. Pilgrims still flock to the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos. They participate in the annual festivities. These usually occur on the first Sunday of May. People travel from all over Portugal.

Imagine the scene. A large open space unfolds before the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos. It spans roughly 2000 square meters. Six plane trees stand tall. A mulberry and eucalyptus also mark the space. This transformation began in 1942. At the entrance stands the original chapel. It was built between 1774 and 1775. To the left are six ancient guest houses. These once sheltered devoted pilgrims long ago. They lead to the majestic temple. It was erected despite numerous challenges that surfaced for almost a century.

Notice the church’s two towers. The right tower holds two large bells. They ring on the Senhor’s feast day. The left tower has only a small bell. It serves to complement the sound. Narrow streets flank the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos. To the left, you will find unique structures. There is the house of branches and the hermit’s house. The latter is the only one with two floors. There is also another guest house. Further back, behind the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos is the old stable and the original bread oven. They were both restored in 2000 and 2001.

Opposite this, you will see the women’s restroom. There is a shed with a manger where animals were tied. The rings used for tethering the animals remain. Then you will find the men’s restroom. The street to the right of Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos features the church. There is also the Senhor’s garden and a small pen. Animals offered during the feast were temporarily kept here.

Inside the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos, devotion deepens. To your right is the little house of miracles. It holds wax mementos. They symbolize the gratitude of devotees. Above is the choir. Stairs lead up to the tower bells. In the main altar, a glass oratory displays the original image. This is the Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos. To the right is an image of Saint Paul. To the left, an image of Our Lady of Conception.

The side altars are equally significant. The right altar is dedicated to Saint Peter of Alcantara. Images of Saint Anthony and Saint Francis of Assisi flank it. Next to this altar is an oil painting. It depicts the crucified Christ. The left altar honors Saint John the Baptist. Images of the Virgin Mary and Saint Francis Xavier adorn it. This space is filled with art. Another oil painting shows the crucified Christ with the title Lord of Poverty.

The royal pulpit is on the left. Adobe stairs next to the church’s single side door lead to it. Opposite stands another pulpit. It serves only for symmetry.

The Confraria do Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos plays a crucial role. It promotes devotion to Jesus Crucified. Today, it is known as Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos. The Confraria ensures the cleanliness of this sacred place. It maintains both the church and its adjacent buildings.

As you leave the Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos consider this. For centuries, this sanctuary has welcomed countless souls. Each has come seeking comfort, healing, and hope. Its story is etched in every stone. It resonates in the hearts of those who believe. The Igreja do Senhor dos Aflitos remains a powerful symbol of faith.
