Standing before you is the Igreja de Vilar. This church has a unique story. It began as something quite different. The building first served as the Mosteiro da Visitação de Santa Maria. The Marquesa de Monfalim initiated the convent and school. She was supported by other noble women.

But the story took a turn. With the establishment of the Republic in 1910, religious orders were impacted. In 1922 D. António Barbosa Leão bought the property. He transformed it into a seminary. This is how the Igreja de Vilar, as we know it, came to be.

The seminary building was expanded. This expansion was under the direction of Padre Himalaia. Padre Himalaia’s real name was Manuel António Gomes. He was known as Himalaia because of his height. He was passionate about science.

The Igreja de Vilar is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is considered the third most important church in Massarelos.

Today, the Igreja de Vilar stands as a testament to transformation. What started as a convent became a seminary. It reflects the changing times in Portugal’s history.
