Stepping back in time, imagine the late 13th century. The Igreja de Vila Verde, or Church of São Mamede de Vila Verde, emerges. A small Romanesque church, it holds within its walls a treasure trove of history. The Igreja de Vila Verde retains its original architectural elements. Mural paintings whisper stories of centuries past. Sepulchral remains rest, including sarcophagi with monolithic gabled lids, silent witnesses to the church’s earliest days. The Igreja de Vila Verde wasn’t just a parish church. It served as the presentation church of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro. This connection brought waves of renovations and embellishments, mirroring the grandeur of the monastery. These continued until the dissolution of religious orders in 1834, leaving a layered legacy on the Igreja de Vila Verde. In 2012, the Igreja de Vila Verde was recognized for its historical significance. It was declared a Monument of Public Interest, safeguarding its heritage for generations to come. The church sits near the main road, a quiet sentinel at the entrance to Vila Verde. Its azulejo-clad facade, an uncommon sight in the region, sets it apart. Inside, the Igreja de Vila Verde embraces a simple elegance. The decor is understated, allowing the beauty of the structure itself to shine. While the original side altars have been replaced with newer cement versions, remnants of the past linger. The old altars can still be found tucked away in the church’s storage areas. Three statues grace the interior: Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace), Jesus Christ, and Santo Aleixo (Saint Alexius). Saint Alexius is the patron saint of the church. A bell, cast in 1783, adds its voice to the church’s story.
