The Igreja de São Pedro de Roriz isn’t just a church. It’s a time capsule. It whispers stories of its rich past, from its monastic roots to its role as a parish church. The Igreja de São Pedro de Roriz began its life sometime between the 12th and 13th centuries. It was originally part of a monastery, potentially founded as early as 1070 by D. Toure Serrão. The first documented mention of the monastery, however, dates to 1096, recording a property exchange. King Afonso I later donated the monastery to the Order of Canons Regular of St. Augustine in 1173. This marked a pivotal moment for the Igreja de São Pedro de Roriz. The existing church arose under the Augustinians’ stewardship. Its construction spanned over a century, unfolding in five distinct phases. The first phase saw the creation of the chancel and the nave’s beginnings. The hexagonal layout and intricately carved capitals showcase the artistry of this initial period. Subsequent phases witnessed the addition of portals, the sacristy, and the Santa Maria chapel, culminating in the completion of the triumphal arch at the end of the 13th century. Ownership changed hands over the centuries, passing from the Society of Jesus to the Crown, then to the University of Coimbra, and finally to various private individuals before being acquired by the Viscount of Roriz in the 19th century. The Igreja de São Pedro de Roriz underwent restoration in 1983, ensuring that its story continues to be told.
