Did they really remove those beautiful blue tiles? Standing here, before the Igreja de São Martinho de Sardoura, it’s hard to believe this church was almost entirely covered in them! The current church, with its modern design, replaced the original structure in 1985. The original Igreja de São Martinho de Sardoura was considered the oldest in the area. Although rebuilt, the church’s history isn’t entirely lost. Records from 1758 describe the main altar with its images of the Christ Child, Saint Anthony, and the Holy Sacrament. They also mention a venerated image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, so beloved that a smaller version accompanied parishioners in processions. Imagine the faith and devotion those images inspired over the centuries! While the original structure might be gone, its spirit, like the faint scent of incense clinging to ancient stone, lingers in the Igreja de São Martinho de Sardoura.
