The story of the Igreja de Santo António das Antas is one of perseverance and devotion. This church, nestled in the heart of Porto, is a testament to the unwavering faith of the community that built it. It wasn’t just bricks and mortar that made the church; it was the dreams and aspirations of a small group of seven Catholics who, in 1935, approached the Diocesan Bishop, D. António Augusto de Castro Meireles, with a plea. They yearned for a place of worship in their neighborhood, a place where they could come together and share their faith. The Bishop listened, and the wheels were set in motion for the creation of the Igreja de Santo António das Antas.
The following year, in 1936, the first stone of the church was blessed. While the initial plans were by the architect José Ferreira Peneda, a change of plans came in 1944, when a new project was presented by Fernando Tudela and Fernando Barbosa. This project took inspiration from a classic style with Italian touches and replaced the initial proposal for a simple crypt that had served as the church’s first home. The crypt remains today but has transitioned into a social center, a place where the community gathers for other purposes.
The final construction of the church was completed in 1954, but the parish itself was established years earlier, in 1938, highlighting the deep commitment of the community. It was then that the first priest was appointed to serve the growing parish. The church, with its grand facade and towering bell tower, stands as a symbol of unwavering faith and resilience. This church, with its beautiful sculptures and intricate details, continues to provide a space for reflection, worship, and community, a legacy of dreams fulfilled and a testament to the power of faith in a busy city.
