Igreja de Pias

Gazing upon the Igreja de São Lourenço de Pias, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. This Baroque-style church, nestled in the heart of Pias, Lousada, has a story to tell. Igreja de São Lourenço de Pias was remarkably completed in just three years, from 1736 to 1739. Its austere exterior might initially appear simple. However, a closer look reveals a balanced monumentality. The Igreja de São Lourenço de Pias’s true splendor lies within. The interior is a riot of Baroque ornamentation. The first thing visitors encounter is the chancel, home to a magnificent gilded altarpiece. This altarpiece, a prime example of Joanine Baroque, was crafted by the skilled hands of Manuel da Costa de Andrade. Two additional lateral altarpieces, possibly created by one of Andrade’s disciples, flank the main attraction. The chancel walls are adorned with stunning blue and white figurative azulejo tiles, adding to the visual feast. Igreja de São Lourenço de Pias boasts an impressive collection of religious imagery. Statues of São Bento and Santa Escolástica grace the high altar. Other sculptures depict Nossa Senhora, São José, São Sebastião, Santo António, São Roque, and the parish’s patron saint, São Lourenço. The polychrome and gilded statue of São Lourenço dates back to the mid-18th century. The azulejo tiles lining the chancel walls, arranged in a dado style, deserve special attention. Six panels, three on each side, depict scenes from everyday life. Each panel comprises twenty-one tiles, creating a narrative tapestry. While the exact origins of these tiles remain a mystery, their detailed portrayal of daily life offers a glimpse into the past. The Igreja de São Lourenço de Pias is more than just a building.
