Built by the Jesuits the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Porto is a stunning example of modern religious architecture. Its design is the work of Oficina ARS-Arquitectos a group of architects painters and sculptors pioneering the modern movement in Porto. Architect Mário de Morais Soares led the construction aided by Fortunato Cabral and Cunha Leão. Painter Adalberto Sampaio created the beautiful stained glass windows. Completed in 1933 and solemnly inaugurated in 1936 the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima represents the first project of modern religious architecture in Portugal. Months later a similar church dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Fátima was built in Lisbon designed by Architect Pardal Monteiro with stained glass by Almada Negreiros.

Imagine the buzz of activity during the construction. Workers toiled tirelessly shaping concrete and stone. The rhythmic clang of hammers echoed through the streets. The scent of fresh mortar filled the air. The artisans meticulously crafted the stunning stained-glass windows. Their vibrant colors hinting at the spiritual heart within.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima’s design is both striking and subtle. The rectangular structure features a longitudinal nave. Seven bays rhythm the nave. The first bay is filled with an endonártex supporting a high choir. A narrower chapel-mor is aligned with two attached sacristies. The entire structure is topped with flat roofs.

The main facade reflects influences from German Expressionism. This is evident in the treatment of central elements. The portal is topped by a stained-glass window a subversion of traditional forms. The upper element stands out with its size and use of longitudinal elements. These elements add rhythm and movement. Long slits flanking the portal and window draw inspiration from medieval revivalism.

Inside the structure’s skeleton marked by Tudor arches defines the bays that rhythm the nave. The Tudor arch serves as both a revivalist decorative element and an ideal structural element in concrete architecture. The church displays characteristics of Jesuit architecture. A modern treatment of forms is visible in the symmetrical side walls. This is apparent in the sequence of three orders. Lateral chapels are marked by parabolic arches. They are topped by circulation galleries open to the nave through tribunes. Above these are Tudor-arched windows providing illumination. The last bay is also marked on these walls by a high narrow opening. This creates the illusion of an inscribed transept.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith innovation and artistic expression. It’s a place where history whispers secrets through its stained glass. It’s a space where the past and the present converge. It holds a significant place in the cultural heritage of Porto. It stands as a beacon of architectural ingenuity and spiritual devotion.
