Have you ever heard of a church that began in a small chapel? This is the story of Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Areosa, situated in the bustling city of Porto. It started humbly as a small space, belonging to the Claretian Missionaries, also known as Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a congregation established by Saint Anthony Mary Claret.
It was in 1979 that the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Areosa was officially recognized as a parish. Bishop Antonio Ferreira Gomes, responsible for the Porto diocese, issued the decree creating it. But its journey wasn’t complete, for it took another eight years for the dedicated community to inaugurate this new, beautiful church. On 17 May 1987, the church opened its doors, ready to welcome worshipers and spread the good news of Jesus Christ.
The Claretian Missionaries were known for their commitment to social justice and uplifting the community.
