“Why is this church facing the wrong way?” someone whispers, their voice echoing softly off the ancient stone of Igreja de Lavra. That’s a question visitors have been asking for centuries. Unlike most churches built facing east, Igreja de Lavra greets the rising sun from its front door. Legend claims that after the original church was built in the 1720s, oxen tethered to the building overnight mysteriously turned it around. A more practical explanation suggests a deliberate choice to protect the interior from the chilly Atlantic winds blowing in from the west. Whatever the reason, Igreja de Lavra stands as a curious exception to architectural norms. Step inside, and you’ll discover a beautiful Baroque interior, a testament to the artistic sensibilities of the 18th century. Admire the intricately carved altarpieces, added in 1755, and the grand rocaille altarpiece, a masterpiece installed in 1772. These treasures speak of a time when Igreja de Lavra served as the heart of this parish, a role it continues to play today.
