Igreja de Coimbrões – Igreja de Sta. Bárbara

“Imagine a time when this bustling neighborhood was just a scattering of homes, surrounded by thick groves of cork oak trees.” You might be surprised to learn that Igreja de Coimbrões – Igreja de Sta. Bárbara, right here before us, was once a much smaller chapel nestled among those very trees. Back in 1719, the residents of Coimbrões, eager for a larger space to worship, decided to replace their tiny chapel. However, due to limited resources, the construction of the new chapel, though larger and more beautiful, took over a decade to complete. Over time, Coimbrões flourished, becoming known for its pottery workshops. The chapel, however, couldn’t keep up with the growing population. By the late 19th century, it was in desperate need of repairs. So, in 1881, the construction of a brand new church began on this very site – the Igreja de Coimbrões – Igreja de Sta. Bárbara as we see it today. Although construction was plagued by financial difficulties, a generous benefactor named Joaquim Fernandes de Oliveira Mendes stepped in. His contribution allowed for the completion of the facade and the tower. Finally, on December 8th, 1893, the church we stand before was inaugurated. Look closely, and you’ll find a plaque on the side of the church, a testament to the generosity of Mr. Mendes and the unwavering spirit of the Coimbrões community.
