Is that a lamb I see? Look closely at the Igreja de Carneiro. You will see the figure of a lamb repeated. It is also known as Agnus Dei.

Welcome to the Igreja de Carneiro. It is a chapel full of history and art. This chapel belonged to the Carneiro family. João Carneiro commissioned it in 1525. The Carneiro name translates to lamb in Portuguese.

The architecture showcases the style of Renaissance elites. Diogo de Castilho’s workshop is credited with its design. You can see the lamb symbol in the vault’s keystone. It is also on the small columns near the entrance arch. These elements link to Saint John the Baptist and the Carneiro family name.

Notice how the altarpiece fits perfectly. It follows the lines of the 16th-century ribbed vault. The ornaments reach high. They show a strong Rococo style. At the base sits the original rectangular altar table. Unlike most altars in the church it remains unchanged.

The altarpiece includes a 16th-century painting. It depicts the Baptism of Christ. André de Padilha is believed to have painted it. Gold leaf enhances the artwork.

Look closely at the painting. You will see John the Baptist baptizing Jesus. A portrait is on the left. It is believed to be João Carneiro. He was the donor who commissioned the painting. The Igreja de Carneiro is a blend of family history artistic beauty and religious symbolism. Its details tell stories of faith patronage and artistic skill.

Pause for a moment. Consider the Carneiro family’s legacy. They left their mark on this chapel. Their devotion and artistic taste are still visible today. The Igreja de Carneiro is more than a building. It is a testament to enduring faith and family heritage. It stands as a reminder of the people who shaped Porto’s cultural landscape centuries ago.
