Gleaming in the sun, Igreja de Arcozelo stands as a testament to faith. This church is also known as Igreja de Sāo Miguel. It sits in the Largo da Igreja in Arcozelo. This place belongs to Vila Nova de Gaia in the Porto district.

Estimates place its construction between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Imagine villagers gathering here centuries ago. They sought solace and community within its walls.

Let me paint a picture for you. Igreja de Arcozelo is small with a rectangular shape. A square tower rises on the left side. Behind it stands the sacristy. The church facade is completely covered in tiles. The surrounding courtyard once served as a cemetery. Think of the generations laid to rest here.

Inside Igreja de Arcozelo features a single nave. The church has undergone changes over time. Once the church was called Santa Maria de Arcozelo. An old story says the church was first in a field between Arcozelo and Mira near the sea. People called that field Pardieiro.

Long ago the land suffered plagues and became barren. Only eleven people lived. They moved the church from that old place since they couldn’t rebuild it. They began to attend a small chapel. It was dedicated to Sāo Miguel in a place called Buraco. This is where Igreja Paroquial de Sāo Miguel de Arcozelo stands today. Over time Sāo Miguel became the patron saint. Some people still call it the Church of Buraco.

Arcozelo was once part of the Monastery of Grijó. Documents from the 12th century mention this connection. In 1121, a portion of land in “villa dicta Ansemir” was sold for fabric. During economic hardship even land could be traded for goods.

By the 13th century the parish of Arcozelo was known under Sāo Miguel. But that was not always so. Manuel Rodrigues de Pinho wrote about this in 1758. He said that the church used to be in the field called Pardieiro.

Important events happened here over the centuries. In 1214, a division agreement was signed at Igreja Sancti Michaelis de Arcozello. Pedro Galego and his wife Estefânia made the agreement. It was with Prior Pedro and the convent of Grijó.

Pelágio Pais and his wife Estefânia donated their share. They gave their share of Ecclesie quo vocatur Sacti Michaelis de Arcuselo to the Monastery of Grijó in 1217. This gift was for the good of their souls.

In 1320, the Igreja de Arcozelo paid the Cabido da Sé do Porto taxes. These were paid in wax, old coins, wheat, oats, and millet.

The Igreja de Arcozelo is a historical landmark. It has witnessed centuries of change. Today it serves as a reminder of Arcozelo’s rich past. It shows the enduring power of faith. Take a moment to appreciate its simple beauty. Reflect on the stories it holds within its tiled walls.
