On a busy day in Cedofeita, have you ever noticed the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita? This Evangelical Baptist Church holds a unique place in Porto’s religious landscape. Founded on March 19, 1956, its story is one of faith. It is also about resilience, and community.

The Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita began with twelve believers. They came from the Tabernáculo Baptista. They established themselves in rented rooms at Rua de Cedofeita number 122. Three veteran pastors led the new congregation. Raul Pinto de Carvalho served as pastor for five years. Joaquim Eduardo Machado and João de Deus Ferreira were also among the founders.

Growth marked the early years of the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita. In March 1962, José Gonçalves became the pastor. For thirteen years, he guided the church through expansion. The congregation grew to nearly 200 members. Christian service extended to children and youth. The church emphasized missions and evangelism. They focused on national and international cooperation.

By 1964, the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita needed more space. They acquired property at Rua de Cedofeita numbers 167-173. Adapting the building was a challenge. Members dedicated themselves to the task. On March 19, 1967, the church celebrated its eleventh anniversary. They inaugurated a sanctuary seating 250 people. There were facilities for Christian education too. These facilities supported social, sports, and administrative activities. It was a glorious time. The Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita grew internally. It also birthed two new churches. These were in Francos and S. Mamede de Infesta. A prefabricated building was added. It housed three rooms and a bathroom. Members actively participated in denominational activities. They held leadership positions at national and international levels.

In September 1974, Pastor Gonçalves departed due to internal disagreements. The Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita faced a difficult period without pastoral leadership. It lasted for fourteen months. Many members left. Discouragement loomed. Yet, the church remained standing.

November 1975 marked a turning point. Herlânder Felizardo accepted the pastorate. A new chapter began. The people were ready to work. For three years, the church rediscovered its Christian service.

In 1979, Pastor Felizardo accepted another pastorate. The Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita experienced instability again. Pastor Artur Soares provided interim leadership in 1980. Then, the church invited Abel Pego. He was studying in Switzerland. He accepted the invitation.

January 4, 1981, ushered in a new era for the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita. The new pastor arrived. It was the year the church celebrated its 25th anniversary. Pastor Pego wanted a long ministry in Cedofeita. He focused on building a community of love with Jesus Christ as its head. He also wanted to respond to the call of making disciples. Investing in inter-church cooperation was another goal.

Over the years, the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita continued to grow. In 1982, the sanctuary was renovated. A pastoral residence was built. A new pavilion provided space for Christian education. The social hall was improved. It hosted community meals, social events, and concerts.

Located in the city center, the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita welcomes visitors. In recent years, it has welcomed many believers from Eastern Europe. Ukrainians and Russians are among them. This led the church to invite Oleg Bukovskyi. He is a Russian-speaking pastor.

The Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita is a local community with a global vision. It cares for its members. It nurtures them with the Word of God. Worship, Bible study, prayer, and testimony are central. The church promotes actions that make members feel part of the Body of Christ. The Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita collaborates with sister churches. They support missionary work. They also promote Christian education. They are committed to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a message of love, forgiveness, and hope. As you continue your tour, remember the Igreja Baptista de Cedofeita. It stands as a beacon of faith in the heart of Porto.
