Beneath the bustling M-30 motorway lies a hidden gem. Iglesia Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Can you believe it? A church tucked away under a highway.
This isn’t just any church. Iglesia Santo Domingo de la Calzada holds a unique place in Madrid’s history. Originally intended as a temporary structure it served as a parish church. The Parroquia del Bautismo del Señor. This was in 1978. It was built within a tunnel. The tunnel is 35 meters long. It has a half-barrel vault.
The church’s story is one of resilience. When a new permanent building was found the parishioners refused to let go. They loved their little church under the M-30. They affectionately call it the “Capilla del Puente” or Bridge Chapel.
The construction was simple. A concrete floor and brick walls. The original concrete texture was kept. It was later painted white. Brick walls were added. These were decorated with stained-glass windows. These provided much-needed light. The floor is white terrazzo. The overall design is simple. There are elements of patinated wrought iron.
Challenges arose. Leaks and dampness plagued the chapel. In 2013 architects Soledad García Morales and Antonio Vela Cossío stepped in. They devised an ingenious solution. They divided the space. One area for the chapel the other for prayer and reflection. A new inner structure was built. This diverted rainwater into perimeter channels. This ingenious solution saved the beloved chapel.
The altar’s placement is another fascinating detail. Initially accessible from both sides of the bridge. This created an unusual effect. People entered through the back. They appeared through a velvet curtain behind the altar. The altar was placed centrally. This is unusual for chapels of this style.
Today Iglesia Santo Domingo de la Calzada continues to serve the community. A testament to faith. It’s a reminder that sacred spaces can exist even in the most unexpected places.
