Founded on June 12 1747 Iglesia Santa Rosa stands proudly in Arequipa. Its white volcanic sillar stone gleams in the sun. This beautiful church is a testament to faith and resilience. Originally planned for Moquegua it found its home in Arequipa’s historic center. Don José Alcázar and Doña María Peñaloza’s generous donations made it possible. They bequeathed their wealth ensuring the monastery’s creation.

The church is smaller than Santa Catalina and Santa Teresa monasteries. It’s known as the poorest of the three. It never owned vast estates or farmland. Yet its simple elegance speaks volumes. The main entrance boasts a sillar-carved portal and a bell tower. This gateway leads to the nave where Mass is celebrated. A charming courtyard lies on the Pasaje Santa Rosa side. This courtyard includes another carved portal and a shop. Here you can find traditional sweets made by the nuns.

But Iglesia Santa Rosa is more than just a beautiful building. It holds a unique place in Arequipa’s history. It played a pivotal role during the 1843 Regenerating Revolution. The battle between Vivanco’s and Castilla’s troops raged around Plaza España. Forces took positions in nearby towers. Castilla’s soldiers occupied the Santa Rosa Monastery tower. The fighting was intense. Bullets flew back and forth. Then a child was spotted walking along the monastery walls. Seeing this innocent child stopped the bloodshed. It’s said the child saved the nuns. This event sparked the devotion to the Niño Cabezoncito. This beloved “big-headed child” remains a symbol of hope.

The monastery was again a battleground during the 1856-1858 Civil War. Castilla’s forces stormed the building on March 7 1858. They attacked the trenches and the church itself. Blood ran in the nearby ditch. The Inmortales column was annihilated with thousands killed. Even future War of the Pacific heroes Colonel Bolognesi and Marshal Cáceres were wounded there.

Today Iglesia Santa Rosa continues to serve as a place of worship and devotion. The Niño Cabezoncito remains a central figure. His image stands atop a skull. This symbolizes triumph over death. The annual Easter procession is a moving event. It features the resurrected Christ and the Virgin Mary. The Niño leaves through the Santa Marta gate. The Virgin departs from the San Pedro street gate. They meet. They return to the church together. Their meeting is a testament to enduring faith and hope. Iglesia Santa Rosa. A place steeped in history faith and enduring miracles.
