Gazing up at the Iglesia San Pedro, did you ever imagine it sharing a wall with a hospital? This unique arrangement gives the Iglesia San Pedro a special place in Antigua’s history. Built in 1654 by architect José de Porres, the Iglesia San Pedro has witnessed centuries of Antigua’s story unfold. Earthquakes have rattled the city, yet San Pedro has miraculously remained standing. Restorations have helped preserve its beauty and resilience. Its baroque style, with circular, Salomonic details, stands as a testament to its enduring strength. The Iglesia San Pedro’s facade, perpendicular to the entrance of the Hospital de San Pedro, creates a shared, intimate atrium. Notice the four niches on the facade, designed to hold statues of saints. Yet, they remain curiously empty, adding an unexpected touch to San Pedro’s story. Inside the church, a mural by Rosamaría Pascual de Gómez depicts the continuing social work inspired by Santo Hermano Pedro. Another intriguing feature is the bell, a gift from the Granadilla government in Tenerife, Spain. This bell resonated with history when Pope John Paul II canonized Hermano Pedro. The Iglesia San Pedro isn’t just a church. It’s a symbol of Antigua’s spirit, a blend of resilience, artistry, and enduring faith. Its connection to the hospital underscores a commitment to community, a reminder that faith and service often go hand in hand.
