This church’s story began long ago. In 1778, they laid the first stones. Imagine the solemnity of the ceremony. Bishop Manuel Abat Yllana led it. Religious, civil, and military authorities attended. Locals were also present. They placed the stones at the presbytery’s four corners. Reverend José Martínez Villa supported the work. He spent about two thousand pesos on a small vaulted section. But the project stalled.
Years passed without progress. Then, Juan Sanguensa, a Dominican friar, stepped in. He knew the spiritual needs of Socabaya’s people. He commissioned Felipe Santos Llamosas and Felipa de la Cruz to collect alms. They traveled through neighboring regions. Their efforts revived the church’s construction. Walls rose to the vault. Another vaulted section served as a shed. It also supported the structure. Yet, the 1784 earthquake destroyed it all.
In 1794, Bishop Pedro José Chávez de la Rosa took charge. He was tasked with rebuilding the Iglesia San Fernando Rey de Socabaya. He appointed Bachiller Juan Domingo de Zamacola y Jáuregui to oversee the work. With the support of Felipe Santos, his wife Felipa de la Cruz, and the people of Socabaya, the church was rebuilt in just one year and four months. Imagine the dedication of these people. They prepared stones and mortar. They worked tirelessly.
The Iglesia San Fernando Rey de Socabaya stands as a symbol of faith. Its neoclassical facade faces north to south on the main square. The church is entirely constructed of sillar. Inside, a single nave leads to the main altar. Seven smaller altars line the walls. Eight mixed Ionic-Corinthian columns adorn the space. A solid sillar baptismal stone is a notable feature. San Fernando, the church’s namesake, is its patron saint.
