From the heart of the jungle a beacon of faith arose. Welcome to the Iglesia Reino de Dios in Cancun. This isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to perseverance a story etched in the very soil of this vibrant city.
Before Cancun became the international tourist hub we know today it was a humble area. In 1975 a small group of faithful people gathered. They yearned for a place to worship. They were part of the Iglesia Apostólica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús. Their devotion led them to establish the first IAFCJ in this area.
Their early meetings were held in homes. They journeyed to Merida for services. It was a significant undertaking. This early church was located in Cancun’s city center. Its members faced challenges. Transportation was scarce. The journey was often difficult.
Pastor Gorgonio Valencia recognized their dedication. He began visiting monthly. He brought studies and eventually held services. Sadly he passed away in 1977. However his vision lived on. Pastor Ascensión González continued his work. He connected the small congregation with other Apostolic families in Ejido Alfredo V Bonfil. This was a pivotal moment in the church’s history.
A fascinating anecdote emerges from this period. One of the early converts Tavita Castorena recalled her family’s trips to a local CONASUPO store. They often heard singing from a nearby house. They wondered if it was another Apostolic church. They never imagined it was the Chay Pereira family. That same family would later play a crucial role in their community’s faith.
The Iglesia Reino de Dios wasn’t built overnight. The early members faced many difficulties. There was the challenge of finding land. Then came Hurricane Gilberto in 1988. It demolished their first church. Yet they rebuilt. They persevered. Their faith was unwavering.
The church’s growth was significant. It expanded quickly. More space was needed. The construction of their current building was monumental. A large cenote presented a challenge. The members tirelessly worked to fill the cenote. They transformed a potential obstacle into a testament to their shared dedication.
In the years that followed the Iglesia Reino de Dios continued to thrive. It became a place of spiritual growth community and service. It became a symbol of resilience faith and hope. It’s a reminder of how a small group of individuals created a spiritual oasis in the heart of the bustling city. As you stand before the Iglesia Reino de Dios remember its rich history. Remember the people who poured their hearts and souls into creating this house of worship. Their legacy continues.
