The history of Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Espana Church traces back to 1970. A young Colombian preacher named Hernán Silguero arrived in Houston. His vision was to establish a church of the Name of Jesus. He wanted to minister to Houston’s Hispanic community.
After a few months, Silguero met Olivia Cárdenas. She supported his desire by opening her home. There, they held services and preached. In April 1971, the first Sunday school took place. It was in a small rented space on Irvington Boulevard. Nineteen people attended.
By 1972, rapid growth forced a move to Fulton Street. Many were baptized in the name of Jesus there. After difficulties, the church bought a house on Fulton Street. They converted it into a place of worship.
In 1975, the house was demolished. A temple for 200 people was built. In 1976, they had to expand due to growth. An addition opened along Fulton Street. Another wing opened on Lindale Street. By the next year more space was needed. The second expansion completed in 1978.
Two years later the church bought neighboring properties. This allowed for the construction of a social hall. In the 1980s, the church experienced impressive growth. This growth mirrored the increase of Latinos from Mexico and Central America.
During this time, the organization’s first works were established. These included Segunda Iglesia in 1977. Then Tercera Iglesia began in 1983. Also Cuarta and Quinta in Houston were founded. Others were started in Texas and other states.
