Could a simple house on Mario Vásquez Street hold the key to a spiritual revival? Here at 1012 Mario Vásquez, stands the Iglesia Pentecostal in Puerto Varas. It’s not just a building. It’s a testament to a faith that has taken root and flourished in this lakeside town. The Iglesia Pentecostal isn’t just a local place of worship. It’s a part of a larger story, a story of Pentecostalism in Chile. This movement ignited in Valparaiso in 1902. A spark ignited by an American missionary, Rev. Dr. Willis C. Hoover. He encouraged his Methodist followers to embrace charismatic gifts. Soon, his congregations were filled with singing, shouting, and speaking in tongues. The fervor spread, leading to the formation of the Methodist Pentecostal Church in 1910. The Evangelical Pentecostal Church followed in the 1930s. Then came the Pentecostal Church of Chile and the Pentecostal Mission Church in the 1940s. Here in Puerto Varas, the Iglesia Pentecostal continues this vibrant tradition. Led by Pastor René Burgos Barreda and Pastora Cecilia Bustamante Ojeda, the church serves as a spiritual anchor for the community. Another branch of the Iglesia Pentecostal, located on Ruta V50 at kilometer 9, further extends the church’s reach in the Puerto Varas area. There, Pastor Adolfo Rehel Silva and Pastora Gladys Ramírez Hernández lead the congregation. The Pentecostal movement, with its focus on direct experience of the divine, has resonated deeply with many Chileans. By 2021, approximately 15% of the Chilean population identified as evangelical, a testament to the enduring power of this faith. The Iglesia Pentecostal in Puerto Varas stands as a beacon of this faith, a place where the spirit of Pentecostalism continues to thrive.
