The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile began in 1851. Elder Parley P. Pratt and his wife Phoebe arrived in Valparaíso. They faced civil war and language barriers. After little success they left. No convert baptisms were recorded. Elder Pratt expressed his desire to learn Spanish. He wanted to translate church texts. He hoped to lay the foundation for the restoration.
Missionaries returned to Chile more than a century later. The first Chilean baptisms occurred on November 2 1956. Ricardo García was the first person baptized. His wife and two others followed.
Fast forward to November 1964. Carl Beecroft the Chilean Mission President visited southern Chile. He met with the mayor of Puerto Montt. The local paper reported their hope. They wanted to start a branch and build a meetinghouse. Elders Gary Parnell and Norm Whiting were sent to Osorno. Elders Noel Roundy and Alan Winder went to Puerto Montt.
In March 1997 Chile reached a milestone. It became one of only four countries. These countries had 100 stakes of the Church. The creation of the Puerto Varas Stake marked this achievement. The meetinghouse was packed. About 300 members stood in hallways. They witnessed this historic event. The Puerto Varas Stake was created. It was formed from a division of the Puerto Montt Stake. Church membership in Chile was 431000 at the time.
