“Argentina stirs with revival” is a phrase echoing in some evangelical circles. Right here we stand before Iglesia Evangélica. It is a testament to faith and community. This church has a rich history. It reflects the evolving religious landscape of Argentina.

The Iglesia Evangélica’s story intertwines with European immigration. Specifically, it involves German people from the Volga region. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917 they sought new lives in Argentina. These families gathered. They met in a school hall in San Antonio village. Jorge Geier led them. Their religious roots were in pietistic Reformed traditions. They desired a new denomination.

Initially, they called themselves the Evangelical Free Congregation in San Antonio. Later, they became the German Evangelical Religious Society. They found it hard to align with the Lutheran churches’ structure. So they sought help from Congregationalist churches in the USA. Carlos Holzer was the first ordained pastor sent from the United States. In 1924 the congregation adopted the name Iglesia Evangélica Congregacional Argentina. The Iglesia Evangélica then expanded. Congregations arose in Irazusta, Urdinarrain, Villa Mantero, Almada and Costa San Antonio.

Today the Iglesia Evangélica has spread across several provinces. These include Entre Rios, Misiones, Chaco, Formosa, Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Santa Fe. It continues to grow.

The Iglesia Evangélica adheres to the Heidelberg Catechism and Luther’s Small Catechism. It is also a member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches. In 2004 it had 20000 members. These members were spread across 130 congregations and 30 house fellowships.

Argentina is known for tango. It is also known for its love of beef and mate. Mate is an herbal tea. About 76 percent of Argentinians identify as Roman Catholic. Less than 10 percent actively practice. Only around 9 percent identify as evangelicals.

Some observers see signs of reformation within Argentina. They notice young people engaging with online religious content. The Gospel Coalition’s Spanish website serves as a valuable resource.

A challenge for the Iglesia Evangélica is maintaining sound doctrine. It is about avoiding unhealthy extremes. Some churches lean toward formalism and legalism. Others preach a health-and-wealth gospel. They have pastors claiming to be apostles. There is an opportunity for churches. Churches can combine cultural sensitivity with theological seriousness.

The Iglesia Evangélica’s journey reflects Argentina’s religious dynamics. It exemplifies faith, community and adaptation. It also embodies the hope for spiritual revival. The Iglesia Evangélica stands as a beacon. It offers a message rooted in Reformed traditions. It spreads across Argentina. It continues to evolve.
