Hidden amidst the vibrant tapestry of Tijuana, Mexico, lies the Iglesia El Divino Rostro, a testament to faith and community. Let’s unravel the captivating story of this sacred space, a story woven with devotion, perseverance, and the unwavering spirit of the people who brought it to life. Iglesia El Divino Rostro wasn’t always a beacon of hope. Its story begins in 1987 with a vision. A group of paisanos from Coatzingo, Puebla, led by Isabel Vázquez G. and Prisciliano Tenorio R., formed the “Cofradía del Divino Rostro de Jesús.” Their dream was to build a sanctuary dedicated to their beloved Santo Patrono, the Divino Rostro de Jesús. In 1988, they acquired land in Fraccionamiento Cortéz. The following year, Bishop Emilio Carlos Berlie Belaunzarán blessed the ground, laying the first stone of what would become Iglesia El Divino Rostro. Construction, spearheaded by architect Ernesto Alonso Moreno Luna, concluded in 1990. That same year, the first celebratory mass echoed through the newly completed sanctuary. Initially a modest chapel, Iglesia El Divino Rostro gradually expanded its spiritual embrace. Regular Sunday masses, Thursday Hora Santa, and Saturday Catechism classes became integral parts of its rhythm. A dedicated group of married couples known as the “Catequúnes” injected a vibrant, family-centric energy, particularly for the children, with puppet shows, ventriloquists, and Gospel reenactments. The church also resonated with the voices of youth, adolescents, lectors, two choirs, and altar servers. A prayer and life workshop led by Jesuit Ignacio Larrañaga further enriched the spiritual offerings of Iglesia El Divino Rostro. Despite its humble beginnings, Iglesia El Divino Rostro has thrived thanks to the unwavering dedication of the mayordomía and the community. Today, this sanctuary, a beacon of hope in Tijuana, continues to extend its embrace, nurturing faith and fostering a strong sense of belonging. The Iglesia El Divino Rostro stands as a testament to the power of shared dreams and the enduring strength of faith, echoing the devotion of those who first envisioned a sacred space for their beloved Santo Patrono.
