“Descendencia” a word that translates to offspring in Spanish. It is this very concept that lies at the heart of our story at Iglesia de Santa Ana. Here we stand before a testament to faith, hope, and the blessings of family.

Iglesia de Santa Ana in Córdoba is more than just bricks and stone. It is a place steeped in history and tradition. This sacred space honors Santa Ana and San Joaquín. They are revered as the parents of the Virgin Mary. Their story, originating in Turkey during the 6th century. It spread westward and became a beloved tradition.

The story tells of Joaquín and Ana. They were a devout couple. They longed for a child. At a temple, Joaquín was turned away because he was childless. Overcome with sadness, he retreated to the mountains to pray in solitude. Ana also prayed. She promised to dedicate her child to God. An angel then appeared to Ana and Joaquín. The angel told them their prayers were heard. They would conceive and their child would be blessed. Ana gave birth to Mary.

Now, let’s journey back in time to the origins of this very Iglesia de Santa Ana. Around 400 years ago, the Iglesia de Santa Ana began as part of the Estancia Santa Ana. Ana Caballero owned it then. In the 17th century, the Jesuit Company took over the land. It became a place of rest for the Colegio Máximo. It also provided fruits and vegetables. In 1953, President Juan D. Perón declared it a National Historic Monument.

Interestingly, historical records reveal that back in 1607, Doña Ana Caballero mentioned Santa Ana in her will. She spoke of “a farm called Santa Ana, in the lands of the Suquía with a mill to grind wheat”. Later, in the 17th century, the Jesuit Company of Jesus acquired the property. According to historian Monsignor Pablo Cabrera, novices would come to Santa Ana to spend the day. It was a place for rest and wholesome recreation.

Architect José Marcos Ortiz Quirós described Iglesia de Santa Ana as structurally simple. A long vaulted ceiling covered the northwest side. Later, five buttresses were added. Subsequent transformations gave the space its purpose for prayer. The building used basic materials like stone and brick. Stone supported vertical loads. Bricks formed the vaults, reflecting the building’s structural behavior.

However, the Iglesia de Santa Ana’s journey wasn’t always peaceful. After the Jesuit expulsion in 1767, the church suffered looting and deterioration. In 1785, it even served as a hospital for contagious diseases. Despite these challenges, Iglesia de Santa Ana persevered.

After being abandoned, restoration work began. In 1987, it regained its beauty. Architect Ortiz Quirós explains that a concrete vault was added. The original stone walls and buttresses were highlighted. These contrasted with the simple facade.
