Doesn’t the gleaming white granite facade of the Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días command attention? Here, near the entrance to Carmen Alto, this sacred space stands as the third temple of its kind in Peru. It adds to the spiritual tapestry of Arequipa.

The story of the Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días began with an announcement by President Thomas S. Monson in October 2012. At that time, over half a million Church members were spread across Peru. Imagine the joy when plans for a local temple were revealed.

Ground broke in March 2017. Elder Carlos A. Godoy presided over the ceremony. He invited all to reflect and change their hearts to become more like Jesus Christ. Think about that call for personal improvement as we consider the temple’s purpose.

On November 30, 2018, a significant moment arrived. A statue of the angel Moroni was placed atop the Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días. Hundreds gathered to witness the event. Their enthusiasm filled the air. This gleaming figure serves as a beacon of hope.

Before its dedication, the Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días opened its doors to the public in November 2019. Over 80000 visitors toured the inside. They learned why the Church builds temples. They heard explanations of the sacred work performed here.

Finally, on December 15, 2019, Elder Ulisses Soares dedicated the Arequipa Peru Temple. He prayed for the early members of the Church in Peru and their pioneering work. He also prayed that many more would come to know their Redeemer.

At 7969 feet above sea level, the Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días stands tall. The single central tower features the angel Moroni statue. The exterior is finished with grey-white granite.

Inside, you will find two instruction rooms and two sealing rooms. There is also a baptistry. The total floor area spans 26969 square feet.

Look closely at the design. A stylized version of the Flor de Texao Arequipa appears throughout the temple. It is visible in the carved hardwood, art glass windows, and metal fixtures. It also features in the stonework and flooring.

Note the Spanish-style water fountain near the main entrance. It mirrors those found in Arequipa’s plazas and courtyards. The landscape boasts native plants. Among them are the cantuta and the queñua. The achupaya is also present, a plant traditionally used in Incan handicrafts.

The Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith and community in Arequipa. As we move on, remember the dedication. Remember the beautiful Flor de Texao. Remember the invitation to turn our hearts toward God.
