Gazing at the Iglesia de Guadalupe, have you ever wondered about its dramatic past? This church, nestled between Lake Nicaragua and the city of Granada on La Calzada street, whispers tales of resilience. Built in 1626 by Friar Benito Baltodano, the Iglesia de Guadalupe initially served as a monastery. Its location, however, would soon thrust it into the heart of conflict. In 1856, the American filibuster William Walker, who had invaded Nicaragua a year prior and declared himself president, seized the church. He fortified the Iglesia de Guadalupe and used it as a stronghold during his brief but tumultuous reign. The church, a place of worship, became a scene of battle. The resulting damage was significant. Restoration efforts wouldn’t be completed until 1965. Today, the scars of history are hidden beneath the church’s simple façade with its three distinctive cones. Step inside, and you’ll find a serene sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Stained-glass windows depict her image, casting colorful light onto the rows of Corinthian columns. As you admire the beauty, remember the stories held within the walls of the Iglesia de Guadalupe. A testament to Granada’s enduring spirit.
