In 1916 a missionary named Juan León Lugo along with Salomón Feliciano and his wife Dionisia held the first Pentecostal service. From its humble beginnings in Puerto Rico the Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal expanded its reach. In 1928 Tomás Álvarez established a branch in New York. The church continued its expansion into Cuba in 1937 and the Virgin Islands in 1945. A significant milestone arrived in 1948. The Sociedad Misionera a missionary society was established in Sabana Seca Puerto Rico. Then in 1949 a Department of Foreign Missions was created.
