Did you know that Iglesia Cristo Rey was Cancun’s first Catholic church? It marked the beginning of faith in this tourist destination. Today we stand before Iglesia Cristo Rey. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol of Cancun’s history and community.

Back in 1971, Cancun was just beginning. A small chapel was built to serve the growing population. That small chapel evolved into Iglesia Cristo Rey. It became the first Catholic church in the area. The church is near Parque de Las Palapas and Parque Lumpa Kul. Locals call it El Parque de los Hippies.

Fernando Marti, a city chronicler, wrote about Iglesia Cristo Rey. He noted it was built in Supermanzana 22. This area once housed dining halls for workers building the Zona Hotelera. The Zona Hotelera is actually called Isla Cancun.

Pedro Ramirez Vazquez designed Iglesia Cristo Rey. From above, it has an almost pentagonal shape. Inside, the roof is covered with bamboo. This bamboo has survived many hurricanes.

Iglesia Cristo Rey broke tradition. Usually, the Municipal Palace faces the church. In Cancun, the City Hall is on Avenida Tulum. The church is more than 100 meters away. The altar features a cross. Behind the cross are large doors with glass.

Though not as large as other churches, Iglesia Cristo Rey is popular. It has a modern style with simple elegance. Thousands visit every Sunday. Many groups are active here. These include Catechists and the Liturgy Group. There is also Night Adoration and Regnum Christi. You will also find the Giro Club and Faro Club. The Legion of Mary and the Christian Family Movement are present. The church also hosts the Renovation in the Holy Spirit. There are Youth and Family Missionaries. ANSPAC and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion also participate. Do not forget the Altar Boys and Choirs. The Pilgrim Virgin of the Family is also represented.

Iglesia Cristo Rey stands out with its eye catching facade. It is a historical landmark. The local community uses it often. Visitors are always welcome at regular services.

The church is located at Margaritas 15 Esquina Tulipanes Supermanzana 22. The phone number is 998 884 0513. You can also reach them by email at cristorey_cancun@hotmail.com.
