Iglesia Cristiano

Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of New York City, Iglesia Cristiano stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Iglesia Cristiano’s story began not in the bustling city, but with a man named Reverend Angel Villamil Ortiz. He was destined for missionary work in Peru, but God had other plans, a detour to New York City. During his fifteen-month stay, Reverend Ortiz played a vital role in establishing a church for the Spanish-speaking community of Spanish Harlem. His tireless efforts led to the church’s incorporation on April 5, 1929, as the First Christian & Missionary Alliance Spanish Church. Iglesia Cristiano’s first home was at 44th Street and 8th Avenue, under the leadership of Pastor Jose Franco. Guided by faith, the church relocated to 114th Street and Madison Avenue. Later, under Pastor Vincent Vallejo, Iglesia Cristiano found its current location on 107th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenue. Construction began in 1957, and on March 6, 1958, the new sanctuary was inaugurated. From 1959 to 1988, Reverend Benito Huamani shepherded Iglesia Cristiano. During his tenure, the church embraced its role in preparing missionaries, immersing them in Latino culture and language. Iglesia Cristiano weathered many storms: the Great Depression, two World Wars, and the social unrest of the sixties and seventies. Through it all, the church remained a beacon of hope in the community. In the challenging eighties and nineties, plagued by drugs, violence, and poverty, Iglesia Cristiano continued its mission of love, comfort, and hope. In September 1988, Reverend Jorge Ibanez took the helm. A testament to his leadership is the new facility, inaugurated in 2007. Reverend Ibanez emphasized the importance of reaching others and making disciples. Iglesia Cristiano celebrated its 90th anniversary in March 2019, marking Reverend Ibanez’s retirement. After a period of prayer and seeking guidance, Pastor Antonio Mottola accepted the call to leadership. After a two-year wait due to paperwork and the pandemic, Pastor Mottola and his family arrived in the United States on July 1, 2022. His official installation took place on September 24, 2022. Iglesia Cristiano continues its mission, writing new chapters in its remarkable story of faith and service.
