“Sea of Milan” they call it. But let’s dive deeper into the story of the Idroscalo. This isn’t just another park. It’s an artificial lake with a past as unique as its present.

The Idroscalo’s story began in the late 1920s. Envisioned as a water airport for seaplanes, its purpose was to prioritize seaplanes over land-based airports. Surveyor Gino Utili designed it. His project was later expanded. The goal was to create a sports and recreation center.

The official inauguration of the Idroscalo took place on October 28, 1930. However, the first seaplane landed here in May 1930. Soon after its opening, demands arose for its use for sports. A grandstand was built for the public. International competitions soon followed. The European Rowing and Powerboating Championships were hosted here in 1938.

The Idroscalo’s waters are fed by springs. These waters are uniquely certified as clean. The Regional Environmental Protection Agency and the CAP Research Centre vouch for it. This cleanliness allows swimming in designated areas.

In 1960, the Idroscalo made its mark in film history. Luchino Visconti filmed some scenes of “Rocco e i suoi fratelli” here. Fast forward to 2010, a new focus on sustainability began. This led to the Idroscalo becoming the second site of EXPO 2015.

The Istituzione Idroscalo di Milano was established in 2019. It guides the park’s enhancement and development.

Today, the Idroscalo is a hub of activity. You can find families, amateurs, and professionals here. They come to stroll, sunbathe or play sports. Running, cycling, canoeing, water-skiing, surfing, and sailing are popular. You can even find people playing rugby, horse riding, skateboarding, and climbing.

Looking for more than sports? The Idroscalo offers art, entertainment, and fun. Visit EuroPark Idroscalo for rides. Gud Beach offers a place to relax and enjoy the water. Acquaplay Water Park is perfect for kids. Riviera EST and La Villetta provide swimming pools. Wakeparadise Milan Idroscalo allows wakeboarding and water skiing.

Don’t miss the Art Park. Sculptures from contemporary artists decorate the landscape. The Children’s Village provides a playground for kids.

The Idroscalo is open daily. Pedestrian entrances are free. The park is easily accessible by car or public transport. ATM buses and train lines connect to the Idroscalo.

From its origins as a seaplane airport to its current status as a recreational hub, the Idroscalo is more than just a lake. It is a testament to Milan’s innovative spirit and its commitment to providing spaces for leisure and recreation. The Idroscalo continues to evolve. It offers something for everyone who visits its shores.
