Built in 1907 it was the first reinforced concrete structure west of the Mississippi. Boettcher’s Portland cement company occupied it. He staged dramatic fire demonstrations. He wanted to show the world how fireproof concrete really is. Temperatures reached eighteen hundred degrees. The concrete floor survived each time. Journalists and business leaders were stunned.

The Ideal Building became a symbol. It showcased the strength and fire resistance of reinforced concrete. This innovative material rapidly transformed construction. Boettcher’s company renamed itself the Ideal Cement Company. It became the world’s largest privately owned cement firm.
