Fire! That’s what Charles Boettcher used to prove his point. Right here before you stands the Ideal Building. It was revolutionary. Built in 1907 it was the first reinforced concrete structure west of the Mississippi. Boettcher’s Portland cement company occupied it. He staged dramatic fire demonstrations. He wanted to show the world how fireproof concrete really is. Temperatures reached eighteen hundred degrees. The concrete floor survived each time. Journalists and business leaders were stunned.

The Ideal Building became a symbol. It showcased the strength and fire resistance of reinforced concrete. This innovative material rapidly transformed construction. Boettcher’s company renamed itself the Ideal Cement Company. It became the world’s largest privately owned cement firm.

The Ideal Building wasn’t just about strength. It was also about style. In 1927 it received a stunning makeover. Beautiful Cotopaxi travertine was added to its facade. The building housed several banks over the years. Eventually a restaurant called the Broker moved in. It even featured a dining room inside a bank vault. A unique and memorable experience.

This impressive building’s history is rich. It played a pivotal role in architectural history. It demonstrates the shift toward reinforced concrete construction. After decades of use the Broker restaurant closed in 2017. The Ideal Building remains standing. It is a testament to innovation and Denver’s history. It has received well-deserved recognition. It was added to the National Historic Register in the late seventies. Today it is known as The Vault. It stands as a proud monument to Denver’s past. A powerful symbol of progress. A captivating building. Step inside. Feel the history.
