“A practical housekeeping school you say?” That’s Idas skola right here before you. This unassuming building holds a fascinating history. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to Ida Ljungqvist a woman who shaped the lives of countless young women.

Ida Ljungqvist wasn’t just any housewife. She was the wife of Ottonin Ljungqvist the owner of Munksjö Paper Mill. They had eleven children. Ida became a beloved employer to young girls seeking work as maids. She trained them in cooking housekeeping and sewing skills. She empowered them giving them the means to support themselves. Sadly Ida died young at just 38 years old.

Her legacy however lived on. After Ottonin remarried he donated land and a significant sum of money to Jönköping. This generous gift established Idas skola a practical housekeeping school. It was named in Ida’s memory.

The school opened in 1908. The original building you see was designed by architect August Atterström. Ida’s Park was also created at the same time. This thoughtful addition provided a beautiful outdoor space for students. Think of the picnics the laughter the friendships forged within its green expanse.

In 1963 the school moved to a larger more modern building across Friaredalen. It became part of Bäckedalsgymnasiet. Today it continues to educate students in culinary arts and hospitality. The spirit of Ida Ljungqvist providing opportunities for young people still thrives here.

So as you stand before Idas skola remember its rich history. Remember Ida Ljungqvist’s vision her kindness her lasting impact. This wasn’t just a school. It was a place of empowerment opportunity and lasting legacy. A place where young women learned skills. They learned independence and above all self-reliance. A place where a simple act of generosity continues to inspire.
