Established in 1999, the ICBA HQ stands as a testament to international collaboration. Right here in Dubai, this unassuming building houses the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture. ICBA is tackling some of the world’s most pressing agricultural challenges. The ICBA HQ isn’t just an office building. It’s the nerve center for an organization working towards sustainable livelihoods and food security in marginal environments. Their mission is to deliver agricultural and water scarcity solutions in these challenging regions. The story of ICBA began in 1992 with the Islamic Development Bank. Through a series of consultations, the idea for a new institution dedicated to biosaline agriculture took shape. The IsDB, along with the Gulf Cooperation Council, chose the UAE, specifically Dubai, as the perfect location. By 1999, ICBA was operational, thanks to the support of organizations like the IsDB, OPEC Fund, and the UAE government. The center’s research now spans over 30 countries. ICBA focuses on areas affected by salinity, water scarcity, and drought. They identify and introduce resource-efficient and climate-smart crops and technologies. Think quinoa, amaranth, sorghum, even Salicornia, a plant that thrives in salty conditions. ICBA researchers achieved a remarkable yield of 3 tonnes of Salicornia seeds per hectare using seawater. This breakthrough highlights the center’s innovative approach to sustainable agriculture. Housed within the ICBA HQ is a genebank, a treasure trove of crop diversity. It holds over 15,000 accessions of 270 plant species from over 150 countries. The ICBA HQ’s seemingly simple exterior belies the groundbreaking work happening within. It’s a hub of innovation, dedicated to finding solutions for a more sustainable future. The work conducted at the ICBA HQ has the potential to impact communities worldwide. They’re not just growing plants, they’re cultivating hope.
