In 1962, against the backdrop of the French Riviera, a technological marvel emerged. Right here, in La Gaude, IBM established its first computer research center in France, a testament to innovation and progress. This wasn’t just another building; IBM La Gaude was a statement, a bold architectural masterpiece designed by the renowned Marcel Breuer. Imagine a massive, 35,000 square-meter structure, shaped like a giant “X,” rising from 23 hectares of pristine landscape. The building itself was designed to seamlessly blend with its surroundings, its raw concrete exterior reflecting the colors of the hills, and its large windows offering breathtaking views of the coastline. IBM La Gaude quickly became a hub of technological advancement. It was here that French IBM engineers achieved a groundbreaking feat: developing the world’s first computer-controlled business telephone systems. These systems, known as the IBM 1750, 2750, and 3750 Switching Systems, revolutionized communication and set the stage for the technology we rely on today. IBM La Gaude wasn’t just about computers and telephones. It was a place buzzing with life, a melting pot of brilliant minds from France, Europe, and the USA. Over 1,500 engineers worked tirelessly within these walls, pushing the boundaries of technology and contributing to IBM’s global success. Sadly, IBM La Gaude’s story as we know it came to an end in 2015 when IBM moved its operations closer to Nice. However, the legacy of innovation and architectural brilliance lives on. The building, now recognized as a Historic Monument, stands as a proud reminder of a time when La Gaude was at the forefront of the technological revolution.
