“Arslanhane,” a name resonating with the echoes of lions. Let me tell you about the Hz. Osman Cami. This beautiful structure stands as a testament to Ankara’s rich history. The Hz. Osman Cami is not just a place of worship. It is a journey through time.

Its story begins in the 13th century. The Aslanhane Mosque is one of Turkey’s oldest mosques still standing. The mosque dates back to 1290. During the reign of Mesud II of the Anatolian Seljuks its construction began. Its architect was Ebubekir Mehmet. Two Ahi leaders commissioned it Hüsamettin and Hasaneddin.

Interestingly, the mosque’s name evolved over time. In 1330, an Ahi leader named Şerafettin repaired it. The mosque was then named after him. The popular name “Aslanhane” meaning house of the lion comes from a lion statue. The statue was buried within Şerafettin’s mosque walls.

The Aslanhane Mosque is located in Ankara’s old quarter. It sits next to the Ankara Castle. Perched at an altitude of 947 metres, the Hz. Osman Cami overlooks the city. Its location offers a panoramic view of Ankara.

The building itself is a square plan. It covers 400 square metres. A single minaret graces the mosque. The wooden roof is supported by 24 large wood columns. Three gates welcome visitors. Twelve windows allow light to filter in. Seljuk tiles adorn the mihrab. Most of the building material comes from earlier structures known as spolia.

Facing the Hz. Osman Cami lies Şerafettin’s tomb. The location emphasizes the mosque’s historical importance. The mosque underwent restoration between 2010 and 2013. The Directorate General of Foundations completed the work.

Imagine the artisans carefully placing each Seljuk tile. Picture the sunlight streaming through the windows. Feel the cool stone beneath your feet. Hear the echoes of prayers from centuries past. The Aslanhane Mosque connects us to Ankara’s vibrant past.

Today, the Hz. Osman Cami continues to inspire. It serves as a reminder of faith and perseverance. Its walls whisper stories of Ahi leaders Seljuk sultans and dedicated architects. As you leave the Hz. Osman Cami take a moment to reflect. Think about the layers of history that surround you. Remember the house of the lion and the legacy of Şerafettin. Let the spirit of Ankara stay with you long after you depart.
