What if I told you this historic church once belonged to a different denomination? The Hyde Park SDA Church stands at 6 Webster Street. It is in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. This building has a fascinating story that intertwines faith and architectural beauty.

Originally, this building was the First Congregational Church of Hyde Park. This congregation was the second-oldest in Hyde Park. It was established in 1860. The church we see today was built in 1910. The renowned Boston firm Kilham & Hopkins designed it. The stained glass is from Charles Connick.

The Hyde Park SDA Church building is a prime example of Late Gothic Revival architecture. Its stonework and design elements reflect a bygone era. The building earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This designation recognizes its architectural and historical significance.

But how did a Congregational church become a Seventh-day Adventist church? In 2007, the First Congregational Church sold the property. The Hyde Park Seventh-day Adventist Church purchased it. On December 15, 2007, they dedicated the building. At that time, the church had 304 members.

The Hyde Park SDA Church has a rich history. Before moving here, the congregation was known as the Mattapan Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 1985, members of the Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church considered establishing a church in Mattapan. The Mattapan Mission of Seventh-day Adventists was officially organized on January 17, 1987.

Over the years, the Mattapan Mission grew. It established several ministries. These ministries included the Hosanna Choir, the Amania Choir, and the Majestic Choir. The Mezuzah Pathfinder Club was also formed. Evangelistic meetings and personal Bible studies contributed to the mission’s growth.

In January 1996, the Mattapan Mission became an official church. It was renamed the Mattapan Seventh-day Adventist Church. After several pastoral changes, Pastor George Bulgin led the church. Under his leadership, the church moved to its current location in Hyde Park in December 2007. With the move, the church became the Hyde Park Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Today, the Hyde Park SDA Church continues its mission. It serves the community. It provides a place of worship. It enriches the spiritual lives of its members. The church stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and community. It preserves a beautiful piece of Hyde Park’s history. The Hyde Park SDA Church is more than just a building. It is a symbol of evolving faith and community spirit. It is a landmark that continues to inspire.
