The serene beauty of Hwagyesa Temple beckons. Its story unfolds before you. Hwagyesa Temple a jewel nestled in the mountains north of Seoul. Founded in 1522 by Zen Master Shin Wol it embodies centuries of Korean Buddhist history. A fire ravaged the temple in 1618. It was rebuilt the following year. Royal patronage under King Gojong and his father Huengseon Daewongun ensured a complete restoration in 1866. The temple’s architecture reflects an early style. It features wooden elements characteristic of the late 19th century. The main hall Daeungjeon built in 1870 houses statues of the Buddha Triad. Notice the unique Buddha life paintings adorning the panel walls. Huengseon Daewongun’s calligraphy graces tablets and columns. A daebang a structure combining prayer hall monks’ rooms kitchen and living quarters stands before the hall. This was common in royal temples of the late Joseon Dynasty. Hwagyesa Temple also boasts a remarkable bronze bell. Created by the renowned artisan Sainbigu during the reign of King Sukjong this bell features a unique design. It is without a sound pipe. It bears inscriptions in Sanskrit. The bell’s green patina testifies to its age and exposure to the elements. Similar bells made by Sainbigu exist in other temples across Korea.
