Clutching a worn map of Chengdu, I traced my finger along the route to Huojing. “A town built on fire,” I murmured, “Imagine that.” Huojing, nestled west of Chengdu near the Tiantai Mountain National Forest Park, isn’t your typical ancient town. It holds a secret, a fiery past that predates most uses of natural gas worldwide. Huojing traces its origins back to the Northern Zhou Dynasty (557-581 AD), later becoming Huojing County in 616 AD. This ancient town, cradled by Yanjing Creek, boasts almost 1500 years of history. The name “Huojing,” meaning “fire well,” speaks to the town’s unique heritage. Natural gas, seeping from the earth, has fueled Huojing since the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC). Imagine, over two thousand years ago, this town harnessed a power that the Western Hemisphere wouldn’t discover until 1659. Just one kilometer west of the town lie the ruins of the earliest fire well. A humble platform of Han Dynasty bricks, barely half a meter high, marks the spot where history was made. This well, described by Western Han scholar Yang Xiong, was over sixty meters deep and used to boil salt. While Huojing may not boast the architectural grandeur of other ancient towns, its significance in the history of science and technology is undeniable. The town’s quiet streets and traditional wooden houses whisper stories of a bustling past, a time when merchants from all corners gathered. Huojing’s oldest street, Hebei Street, stretches for 1500 meters, a living testament to the town’s heritage. Buildings from the late Qing and early Ming Dynasties still stand, their aged wooden frames and plank walls exuding a timeless charm. The Fire Well Bridge, once the heart of Huojing’s commerce, still echoes with the ghosts of traders and craftsmen. Today, the town retains its old-world charm, a haven for traditional crafts like blacksmithing, mat making, and bamboo weaving. Even wandering doctor stalls, a relic of a bygone era, can still be found here. Huojing’s culinary scene offers simple yet delicious fare: noodles, tangyuan, blood wang, and a unique fried dough treat called crispy meat. Huojing may not be a household name, but its story is an essential thread in the tapestry of Chengdu’s history. It’s a reminder that progress isn’t always linear, and that sometimes, the greatest discoveries lie hidden in the quietest corners of the world.
