In 1944, a vision sparked within a group of Detroit pastors. They dreamt of a new mission, a beacon of faith in Huntington Woods and Berkley. This vision took shape as the Huntington Woods Lutheran Church. The Burton School initially hosted the congregation. Their first service echoed through its halls in February 1945. Huntington Woods Lutheran Church officially became a congregation on April 15, 1945. A charter was signed. A constitution was adopted. The church joined the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod in June 1945. Construction on their own building soon began. The cornerstone of the original Huntington Woods Lutheran Church building was laid on April 28, 1946. The church expanded in the late 1950s. A Christian Education wing was added. This new facility was dedicated on October 7, 1962. Huntington Woods Lutheran Church continued to grow. They opened a Christian Pre-School in 1975. This provided a Christian education for young children in the community. Further expansion took place in 1993. The congregation dedicated this latest addition on Thanksgiving Eve in 1994. Huntington Woods Lutheran Church stands as a testament to their growth and the community’s faith.
