Founded thanks to the generous legacy of William Hunter a renowned Scottish anatomist and physician. The Hunterian Museum wasn’t just any museum. It housed a vast collection unlike any other. Ethnographic materials books and manuscripts were also included. Even insects and other biological specimens found their way into this impressive collection. The initial museum opened in a specially constructed building off the High Street. Architect William Stark designed this building. However as the university expanded the museum relocated. In 1870 the collections moved to their present location. The Hunterian collections now reside in Sir George Gilbert Scott’s neo-Gothic building. Initially the entire collection was housed and displayed in one space. Over time significant sections were moved to other university buildings. The Zoology collections reside in the Graham Kerr Building. The art collections are displayed in the Hunterian Art Gallery. Hunter’s library with its 10000 books and 650 manuscripts is in Glasgow University Library. Donated items like Lady Shep-en-hor’s coffin arrived in 1820. Professor Lockhart Muirhead became the first Keeper of the Hunterian Museum in 1823. Hunter’s anatomical collections are in the Allen Thomson Building. His pathological preparations are at the Royal Infirmary. The Hunterian Museum stands as a testament to William Hunter’s vision and legacy.
