Chemnitz began as a trading place. It was on a salt route to Prague. Chemnitz was chartered in 1143. Then it fell to the Wettin margraves of Meissen in 1308.

The city gained a monopoly in textile bleaching in 1357. This boosted the linen industry and trade. In the 19th century, machine construction took off. It was helped by coal and lignite fields. The first spinning mill in Germany operated here in 1800. The first machine tools and locomotive were also made here.

Hungersberg overlooks a city of innovation. Chemnitz became a major industrial hub. But World War II brought destruction. Allied bombs damaged 80 percent of the city.

In 1953, Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt. This was by the East German government. After reunification, the city voted to revert to Chemnitz.

Today, Chemnitz is a blend of styles. Eastern Modernism stands alongside Art Nouveau. The “Lulatsch” chimney is a Cold War relic turned art. Daniel Buren painted colorful rings on it.

The city has superb museums. Museum Gunzenhauser houses Otto Dix works. Villa Esche showcases Henry van de Velde. The Purple Path links 38 municipalities.

Chemnitz hosts bizarre festivals. There is Hutfestival, Slackfest, and a Steampunk Festival. The city is full of surprises.

Mayor Sven Schulze said Chemnitz was once ignored. He called it a city of reinvention. Chemnitz invites you to be surprised by its creativity.
