This was a former moorland a forgotten corner of the Waltershofen district. They nurtured this tiny patch. Today over fifteen hectares are owned by the NABU. More areas are leased. They haven’t just protected it. They’ve enhanced it. Transforming former fields into ponds and pools. Creating havens with hedges and orchards.
Humbrühl-Rohrmatten boasts incredible biodiversity. Over one hundred bird species have been spotted. Thirty-five of these birds even nest here. Among them the elusive reed bunting and the secretive water rail. Twenty-six dragonfly species also call this place home. The reserve protects rare plants too. The reserve protects special habitats. It does this according to the strict guidelines of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive. It features Magere Flachland-Mähwiesen and Kalkreiche Niedermoore. It is a home to the rare banded demoiselle and the large copper butterfly.
